Dementia in Adults with Depression

   Proposal Description:
   There is a long-established association between hypertension and the increased risk of age-related cognitive decline and dementia. However, the direct effects of antihypertensive treatment and a subsequent reduced risk of dementia is less clear. Observational studies, clinical trials, and systematic reviews have shown conflicting results. Recent evidence has also shown that depression is an   independent risk factor for the development of MCI and dementia. The aim of our study is to compare the clinical outcomes between standard hypertension treatment versus intensive hypertension in a large population of older adults with depression. Primary outcomes to be measured will include: 1) conversion to MCI or dementia 2) cognitive testing scores, and 3) risk of falls. Secondary outcomes will include investigating the role of specific antihypertensive agents on the conversion rate, specific medications, and other psychiatric disorders on the role of conversion to MCI or Dementia.
